[There are a fair few tables to choose from. Athrun chooses one sitting next to a window, and leads the way. He pulls the chair out for Rikku to sit in before sitting in the other chair himself.]

[It wasn't hard for Athrun to see that Rikku felt awkward in this situation. He could relate; it wasn't that long ago that this kind of thing was new to him, too.]

Pretty slow, really. Usually I'd have half a day's work done by now, but I took off today.

[He wanted to use the morning to prepare himself to meet his new fiancée. He had a lot of nerves about this, too, but he was able to calm himself decently enough before showing up.]

Ah, I was just working on fixing up some Machina before I came.

[Before her father pushed her out the door. At the very least, she cleaned herself up afterwords.]

Really? OK, now I'm curious.

I don't have much to do with Machina, but I do with modern tech. In fact, I went to school for mechanical engineering, and I'm a pilot now.

What kind of Machina were you working on?

Really? [Well, that was at least something she could sort of relate to.] A pilot for what though?

Well, it was just a simple bot, nothing really all that special.

Oh, mobile suits. I'm a mobile suit pilot.

[Athrun's nation was pretty well-known for being defended by state-of-the-art technology. The development of giant humanoid machines operated by an individual within the chest was recent, but highly publicized.]

What kind of bot? Any idea how old it was?

It looks like something like a scouter of some sort. What's it like?

You mean, being a pilot?

[Athrun pauses to gather his thoughts.]

It's hard to describe. The mobile suit gives you this feeling of unbridled power...and yet sometimes it still doesn't feel like enough to fight well.

Of course, that's just in flight. We only spend so much time in the air. A lot of it is spent running simulations or going over video recordings. And that's when we're not working on new tactics.

I've learned that it's best not to get too reliant on Machina, since they tend to go a bit wild at times, but they're really useful when used right and taken care of. Thankfully most of us Al Bhed are good at tinkering and repairing to keep them in line.

[Apparently stealing from then breaks them down?? Game mechanics man.]
