[First, some music to set the mood.]

[Athrun has been through many things. However, going to bed in his own bed and waking up in another bed is one thing he hasn't experienced. Nor is dealing with some woman claiming to be his mother. Like he needed that wound reopened. Best getting out of there ASAP.

Athrun found himself in an unfamiliar town. It was small and very...green. Unsure of what else to do, he decided to heed the advice he'd been given. He made his way to the Elm Pokémon Research Laboratory.

After looking in through the windows, Athrun takes a deep breath. Well, nothing's going to get done just hanging out outside. He opens the door.]

Regardless, I hope I've helped give you some confidence to deal with them yourself. Relying on me too much isn't going to get us far, after all.

[ She pouts at that. That's no fun; she's a manager, after all, not a player. (At least not when basketball is concerned...) ]

But you don't expect us to do all of the battling, right? Just like Cyndaquil and I work together, you and I also need to work together.

[ Totally glossing over his question and focusing on some other information instead. ]

Were you part of a military back home?

[ The way he carries himself indicates that he might've been... but she's more of an expert on basketball, not so much wars ]

[Don't think that Athrun doesn't notice that little detail.]

Yes, I was. In fact, I still am. I've been serving in some capacity since I was fifteen.

[ Lalala. Don't know what you're talking about. ]

Since you were fifteen? Really? How old are you now, then?

[ Can't look too much older...

Also not even giving him an opportunity to answer that before pushing forward with one more. ]

Why? Is it required where you're from?

...I'm eighteen. And no, I wasn't drafted. War broke out, and I volunteered out of a sense of duty to my country. Matters got more complicated after that, but...it was something I was good at, and so I remained in the service.

Really? [ This is all very interesting information, and she's taking mental notes. ] What do you do?

I'm a pilot -- specifically, a mobile suit pilot. From the day I graduated from the ZAFT Military Academy until I was summoned here, I've been a pilot.

[ A blink.

Mobile suit? That's all fiction, isn't it? But he sounds serious, and that face really doesn't look like a person who's joking. ]

A mobile suit?

[ Maybe she just heard wrong. ]

Er...

[Athrun hesitates. Did she not know what they were?]

...Mobile suit. A humanoid combat machine about twenty meters tall.

[ Um, right then... of course. Because those exist. ]

And you... 'pilot' them? As in sit inside and control their movements?

Well...yes. There's a cockpit in the torso.

You're not very familiar with them, are you?

[ She shakes her head at that ]

They don't exist where I"m from.

[ At least not... in real life. ]

But...

[That doesn't make any sense. After two wars, everybody should know what mobile suits are. Unless...]

...So apparently not only is this not our native world, but we're from different worlds, as well.

This just keeps getting more and more incredible.

[ Yes... it really does. ]

I'm from Japan.

[ Hmm. She gives it a moment's thought and then adds: ] 2014.

I'm assuming you mean the Anno Domini calendar?

[Which would mean that her time is multiple centuries in his time's past.]

We stopped using that one decades ago. We're now in the Cosmic Era, year 74.

[ Right... then...

.... It's a good thing she added that year as an afterthought. ]

Really?

[ Seriously. This is fascinating. Even if she does think you're just a little bit mental. ]

What is it like in the future?

Uh, well...

[Where to begin? It's not like she asked about anything in partic -- oh. That's an issue.]

That's, er, a rather broad question, isn't it?

[ That's true. ]

Is it vastly different from the 21st century?

[ The whatever calendar he'd said before... that one. ]

In many ways? Yes. For example, we no longer use fossil fuel at all. Everything has transitioned over to cleaner energy sources from the earth, or nuclear power. That was due in part to necessity, though -- Earth's deposits of fossil fuels have all been practically used up.

[ Oh. Well. If there are huge mobile suits or whatever... then there must be... ]

So there's people living in space now, right? And teleporters? And hover cars?

[ All the important stuff, you know. ]

[...Trying really hard to not facepalm now. He's heard stories about how people of the twenty-first century imagined the future.]

...No. I mean, we have space colonies, yes. But teleportation isn't happening any time soon, and hover cars? Probably never.

[ Oh.

She doesn't even bother trying not to look disappointed. She's disappointed, man. This sounds like it sucks. Minus maybe the space colonies, thing. ]

But you still play basketball?

[ Space basketball...? Even better.

She is asking all the important questions, here. ]

[Oh, please. Like hover cars are at all practical or even safe. Drivers are bad enough these days; giving them an additional dimension to maneuver in would just make things worse.]

Er...yes. All the popular sports from that era are still around. I take it you're a fan of it?
