"Perhaps that would be for the best." Ky gently pulled Faye closer. "No matter what, I'll keep you safe. Trust me."

Faye just looked at him a moment or two, her chest full of warmth. But finally she looked away and sighed, "Thank you..."

Eventually they would get closer to Faye's apartment. It's not a particularly pleasant part of town, the apartments small and dark. At the end of a miserable street, Faye paused and pointed at a building, "That one's mine."

"All right."

Ky slowly drew his sword. He didn't see anybody, but he was being cautious. A few arcs of electricity danced along the blade, gathering at the tip which lit up like a flare, bathing the area in light. He then led the way toward the building that Faye lived in, keeping a firm grip on her hand.

Faye carefully makes her way towards her apartment. She followed close behind him, breathing a little harder in her fear of what she might find there. There didn't appear to be anyone threatening around, but when they reached her place at the top of the stair case it was clear that someone had been gere.

The door to her apartment was wide open. Faye gasped as she saw that her tiny, cheap place had been totally ruined - furniture broken and overturned, clothes torn and scattered everywhere. She didn't appear to have much, but what was there was ruined.

Faye pushed past Ky and ran to the small bedroom where a small safe was lying open on the bed. Faye didn't make a noise, just slowly lowered herself onto the bed as she realised that everything she had was ruined or stolen.

Ky remained silent. There was really nothing he could do here right now other than survey the damage with a heavy heart. From what he could tell, there was virtually nothing left for her.

Ky sheathed his sword and walked into the bedroom, and sat down on the bed next to Faye. The next thing he knew, though, he was wrapping his arms around her body in a hug.

"I'm sorry. I'm so very sorry."

Faye just stayed crouched over on the bed, tensing at first at Ky's touch, more out of surprise than anything else. Then she curled into a tighter ball, her voice choking a little. She stayed still for a moment or two, then cleared her throat as she tried to wriggle out, "They're gone. Let's go."

At those words, Ky released Faye. Then, he got off the bed.

"I'll have to file a report, but that can wait until tomorrow. In the meantime, let's go get you some new clothes. My treat."

Once again, he offered a hand to Faye.

Faye finally got up from the bed. She glanced at Ky with sad eyes, looking at his hand. But she couldn't bring herself to take it. She worried that if she did she would aomehow become too upset. So instead she strolled right past him and out of the apartment.

Once she walked out, she seemed to disappear. It seemed that the two men from before were back, and one of them had managed to grab her and pull her away with his hand over her mouth.

Ky hopped up after Faye walked out of the room, but not quickly enough to see where she went. Confused, he looked around once outside.

"Faye? Faye! Where did you go?"

Again, he drew his sword and lit the tip, bathing the area in light. He looked around, including around the closest corners.

Faye tried to scream but she couldnt, one hand on her mouth and an arm over her throat. She swung her legs as she was lifted, kicking again and again. The light of his sword would catch her leg before she was dragged further away. But the stairwell is small, so it would be clear that these two men were taking her away outside again.

Ky caught the movement out of the corner of his eye. Sensing something was amiss, he ran toward it and began to descend the stairwell at a high speed.

"STOP!" Ky shouted the moment he saw the men. "Let her go IMMEDIATELY!"

The two men did stop, clearly more brawn than brain, Faye still held with an arm across her throat and a hand on her mouth. "Ha! Looks like she has a boyfriend too." He said as Faye thrashed and kicked, with less and less energy left now.

"Yeah right. He clearly paid for her, whore that she is."

"Oh yeah? Then that money is ours now. What you pay for her, hmm? Pretty little thing." He grinned a hideous smile and leaned down to lick Faye's upper ear. Faye then squealed out bit her teeth into the man's finger, causing him to jump in fright and drop her to the ground, gasping for air.

"Hey! You! You made him drop her. Now what?" He sneered in answer to the demand, pulling out both a gun and a large knife. "Come get her if you want her so bad then..."

"Come get her? If that's what you want. RIDE THE LIGHTNING!"

Almost instantaneously, Ky surrounded himself with a sphere of plasma, with smaller orbs of electricity rotating around the edge. He then dashed forward, plowing through the armed thug and driving him into the ground, rendering him unconscious in the process.

The electricity then died down, leaving the smell of ozone hanging in the air. Ky raised his sword again and pointed it at the other thug, while placing one foot on the chest of the one he'd knocked out.

"You. If you value your health, you will not cause any more trouble. I will not hesitate to defend Ms. Valentine from you or anyone else you might have at your beck and call."

The two men clearly were not prepared for this in any way. The guy who was holding Faye dragged a large knife from his belt and pointed it directly at Ky. But his arm started shaking more when his sidekick was dropped to the ground unconscious.

The thug made some ugly faces at Ky, trying to figure out what to do. "That bitch is ours! She owes us! Big time! And if she can't cough up then we'll use her until she makes us the money she owes. Thousands and thousands, you get that?" He was scared, but angry too, and spat on the ground near Faye.

Faye, meanwhile, curled up on the ground, listening but not able to lift her head to look at them. She coughed painfully with her hand on her throat.

"I don't give a DAMN about what she does or doesn't owe you!" At this point, Ky is beyond angry. It's one of the few times he'll ever swear.

"Very soon, her debts to you will be the least of your concerns! After all, you'll soon be in prison!" Ky may have been off-duty, but he was still a police officer, and he could very easily restrain these men and call on some on-duty officers to escort them to the nearest station. And, in fact, Ky then reached up to press a hidden button mounted under his collar, setting off a signal that would alert the police to a situation under way where he was. He then circled the thug, moving closer to Faye, without closing the distance between him and his target.

"Throw down your weapon and surrender. It'll be easier on you if you do."

When Ky got closer, Faye instinctively reached out with a shaky hand as though she just wanted to touch him. But her hand didn't quite reach. Eventually, she started to pull herself into a seated position.

Meanwhile, the thug shrugged his shoulders and held one hand up in surrender while the other had the knife dangling in his hand. "Prison? Nah, nah. Not prison. Hey - we were only having a bit of fun with her. I bet she liked it, hmm? So just - just let us go..."

"Not a chance." Ky stepped ever closer to Faye. "I may be off duty, but I am still a police captain. You chose the worst possible time to show up."

Ky was intent on keeping the thug here until the on-duty officers showed up to take him and his partner away. "Based on what I've seen, you two are facing charges for breaking and entering, burglary, attempted kidnapping, and attempted sexual assault. I suggest being on your best behavior from this point on out."

The thug on the floor wriggled and moaned while the one who was standing stomped hard on the ground like a kid having a tantrum. "What? Are you kidding me? What about this bitch? She should get something for cheating, for lying. Gambling like that - the sneaky bitch... that shit has to be illegal."

Meanwhile Faye curled into a ball and hid her face with her arm - he probably had a point somehow...

"Tell it to the judge."

At this point, the police were starting to arrive. Some vehicles showed up on the nearby street, and Ky raised his free hand in their direction. A group of four officers approached.

"This is them. The woman is with me. I'll be taking her home."

With that, Ky bent down and tapped Faye on the shoulder with his index finger. "Faye. Come on, it's over. Let's go."

The thugs were now left in the hands of the officers, and they really didn't look or sound too happy about it.

Meanwhile, Faye slowly got herself to her feet, but she couldn't bare to look at him. She was so full of embarrassment... The things they'd said she'd done, the way they'd spoken about her, knowing that Ky now knew the seedy and horrible area where she lived... Faye felt miserable. She said nothing, but would quietly follow him along, head bent.

Ky noticed quickly that Faye seemed dejected. Why, he wasn't sure, but he didn't want to let her stay that way.

First, enough following him. He was going to walk next to her. He stopped and stepped backwards until Faye was at his side. Then, he placed one warm, firm hand on her shoulder.

"It's OK. Everything will be all right now."

If he was thinking anything bad about what he had seen tonight, he wasn't showing it.

Faye lifted her head to look at him, eyes wary at the fact he didn't seem mad or disgusted with her. She searched his face and finally dropped her gaze as she started to walk alongside him. "I'm sorry..."

Ky shook his head. "Don't worry about it." He gave Faye's shoulder a reassuring squeeze. "Things happen. All I care about is that you're safe and here with me."

After a moment, he spoke again. "If anything, it is I who owe you an apology. We should have gone to a store."

Faye lowered her gaze - it was too painful to look at him too long given how embarrassed she felt, and how upset she might become if she looked too long. "Ky..."

She took a deep breath and shook her head, still not quite looking at him, "I have nothing now... I couldn't pay for it... It just - never mind..."

Ky shook his head. "No payment is necessary. It's times like these when friends matter the most, yes? You're very dear to me, Faye, and all I want is to help you."
