Gotta Catch 'Em All!

THE POKÉMON AU MEME

Originally released in 1996, the Pokémon franchise is one of the biggest in video game history and has captured the hearts of gamers, hardcore and casual, young and old, worldwide. Now, here's your chance to dive into that world with a character of your own!

REGIONS

1. Kanto (Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, Crystal, FireRed, LeafGreen, HeartGold, SoulSilver). The very first region, and based on the Kanto region of Japan. Trainers from Kanto are typically among the strongest in the whole world, and the region has produced a myriad of famous trainers. However, there aren't many contest halls here, so coordinators will find less to do. The regional villains here are Team Rocket.

2. Johto (Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold, SoulSilver). Based on the Kansai region of Japan, Johto lies to the west of Kanto. Johto is a region steeped in tradition, compared to the more modern Kanto region, and is host to beautiful architecture from ages past. Its most prominent landmark is Mt. Silver, which towers majestically over the whole region -- you can see it no matter where in Johto you are. Trainers can test their Pokémon in sporting events at the Pokéathlon Dome, or travel to the Battle Frontier to undertake unique challenges. Like Kanto, Team Rocket has operations in Johto.

3. Hoenn (Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire). Based on the Japanese island of Kyushu, Hoenn lies to the south of Johto and Kanto. As a result, it has a warmer climate and a greater focus on the sea. The people of Hoenn are often more in touch with nature, but as the all-indoor Mauville City and the Space Center in Mossdeep City show, not at the expense of scientific innovation. The region's geography has also given birth to legends that tell of two Pokémon of equal but opposite powers -- one is believed to have formed the world's landmasses, while the other formed the world's seas. The region also has slightly less emphasis on training than its counterparts, and is host to a vibrant Pokémon Contest scene. However, its trainers possess plenty of skill. The regional villains are split into two teams, a unique feature of Hoenn -- Team Magma and Team Aqua.

4. Sinnoh (Diamond, Pearl, Platinum). Based on the Japanese island of Hokkaido (as well as Russia's Sakhalin Island), Sinnoh lies to the north of Johto and Kanto and has a colder climate. In contrast to Hoenn, Sinnoh is a very industrial region, with an active coal mine in Oreburgh City, a massive ironworks site, and even a wind farm. It's also a region steeped in history, with the ruins in Celestic Town and the library in Canalave City standing out as repositories of knowledge. The region is also home to three major lakes, with each said to have its own guardian deity. Like Hoenn, it also has its own burgeoning contest scene. Its regional villains are Team Galactic.

5. Unova (Black, White, Black 2, White 2). Unova is the first region to be based on geography outside Japan -- in this case, the greater New York Metropolitan Area. Nowhere is this more apparent than in Castelia City, a vast metropolis on the southern end of the central island, which evokes the atmosphere of Lower Manhattan. The rest of the region is less densely populated, but still plenty active. Unova is a very well-settled region, with a great many institutions and innovations. Even its legends are more human-oriented than other regions, with the greatest legend telling of two heroes who conflicted with one another -- one fought for truth, the other for his ideals. The regional villains are Team Plasma.

6. Kalos (X, Y). The Kalos region is based on northern and central France, and like its real life counterpart, it is a region rich in history and culture. It's a very large region, intersected by many waterways, and is host to a tremendous variety of Pokémon. The cultural center of the region is the huge Lumiose City, the largest city to ever be featured in a Pokémon game. Meanwhile, the history can be seen in places such as Camphrier Town, Parfum Palace, and Shalour City. The regional villains are Team Flare.

7. Alola (Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, Ultra Moon). The Alola region is based on the US state of Hawaii, with each island being based on one of the four major Hawaiian islands; Melemele Island (Oahu), Akala Island (Maui), Ula'ula Island (Hawaii), and Poni Island (Kauai). The islands reside in the tropics, and travel between them is limited to ship air -- very few seafaring Pokémon can manage trips between islands. Additionally, an artificial island, which serves as the headquarters for the philanthropic Aether foundation, rests in the center of the sea between the islands. Each island has its own small ecosystem distinct from the others, and the region's vastly different culture affects trainers. Instead of a Gym Challenge, the Alola region offers the Island Challenge, where trainers must undergo trials conducted by Trial Captains, then challenge the Island Kahuna to battle after completing all of the trials. The regional villains are Team Skull.

ROLES

1. Pokémon Trainer -- Most people in the world of Pokémon are trainers. Trainers use Poké Balls to capture wild Pokémon and train them, making them stronger, so that they can battle other trainers. The goal of each trainer is to complete their region's Gym Challenge (or Island Challenge, in Alola's case) in order to be recognized as an elite trainer. Some take it a step further, challenging the local Pokémon League in order to become their region's champion.

2. Pokémon Breeder -- Not all people who own Pokémon battle with them, though. Breeders are more focused on breeding their Pokémon to get the most out of their innate strengths. Breeders will use their best Pokémon to breed Pokémon with desired traits, then offer them to trainers and coordinators for sale.

3. Pokémon Coordinator -- Like breeders, coordinators don't battle. Instead, they train their Pokémon to show off their characteristics in Pokémon Contests. Coordinators look for ways to wow the audience, or, in some cases, rattle their opponents. Contests are displays of beauty, intelligence, toughness, cuteness, or coolness, and will be judged based on the category they're entered into.

4. Pokémon Researcher -- Someone has to discover the knowledge we have, after all! Researchers do exactly what their names suggest, and typically focus on one facet of Pokémon.

5. Criminal -- Unfortunately, there are some trainers out there who resort to a life of crime. These criminals often congregate in teams, with goals ranging from getting rich at other people's expense (Team Rocket) to forcing trainers to release their Pokémon into the wild and keep them separate from humans (Team Plasma). Oftentimes, as well, these organizations have more sinister schemes brewing below the surface...

Prompts

1. Travel - It's a major part of Pokémon journeys! People have to travel from one destination to the next, and almost always on foot -- trainers don't use vehicles aside from the occasional bicycle. But the journey is half the fun!

2. Battle - Competition is what drives all trainers and coordinators. Here, you're in a battle with another trainer, or maybe you're trying to catch a wild Pokémon. Or perhaps you're just trying to get better.

3. Trade - Trading is another instrumental part of training Pokémon. No one can get everything they want on their own, and often people will trade their Pokémon to get what they need. However, be wary -- Pokémon received in a trade may not always obey your commands...

4. Confrontation - Conflict is a driving factor in any story, and Pokémon is no different. You're certain to encounter people who have goals differing from your own, or perhaps even opposing yours. When that happens, there's often only one way to resolve them -- battle.

5. Legends - Not all legends are myths. Some are steeped in facts, and that includes Pokémon. Today, you've been fortunate (or unfortunate) enough to encounter one. What do you do?

6. The Challenge - Regional challenges are an integral part of being a Pokémon trainer, as they're a way to test one's abilities. Here, you're challenging one of the region's eight gyms, entering into a contest, or attempting an Alolan Trial. Good luck!

7. Other - Got any ideas I missed? Go right ahead with them!
