This is the largest, most elegant ballroom you have ever seen. Overhead, golden chandeliers flicker with warm lights, which are reflected on the large, window-shaped mirrors on the walls. A beautiful wooden dance floor sat in the center of the room, with ornately-decorated tables all around it. In the back is a pair of glass doors leading to a balcony that overlooks some gorgeous scenery.

You're a knight as well, I'm guessing. Or a dancer who does a lot of weight training.

I suppose that would depend on your definition of a knight. I was, however, a soldier who worked his way into a commission. Nowadays, I serve as an officer of international law.

[Fortunately, swordfighting translates well to the balance and footwork needed well enough that Signum can follow easily, even if she doesn't dance much.]

That's more or less what I'm doing nowadays as well. I'm actually here as an escort for my superior.

Alas, I cannot say the same. I took up the art at age ten, but I was able to master it in five years.

Impressive, being able to call yourself a master that young...I suppose that's how you proved yourself in the military.

Indeed it is. I first asked to join when I was ten, but Commander Kliff told me I was too young...but if I trained for five years and came back, then things might be different. I did just that, and he inducted me after a single spar.

It was shortly after my mother died. I had nothing else left, and I wanted to make a difference.

Losing a loved one is hard, especially that young. Most people don't channel that kind of grief so positively.

I know. I thank the way my mother raised me for that...as well as my own adoration of Commander Kliff. The clergy who ran the orphanage I ended up in did a lot to help me, too.

I'm not a religious person myself, but I admire what churches do for people.
