This is the largest, most elegant ballroom you have ever seen. Overhead, golden chandeliers flicker with warm lights, which are reflected on the large, window-shaped mirrors on the walls. A beautiful wooden dance floor sat in the center of the room, with ornately-decorated tables all around it. In the back is a pair of glass doors leading to a balcony that overlooks some gorgeous scenery.

[To play, just comment here to start a thread, or go around and tag other people. You don't have to use the setting described here, either -- you can set it in a different ballroom, or you can start before the ball. It's up to you!]

[Signum is not so much the dancing type as she is the type to automatically flow into the role of chaperone, hiding behind slow sips of punch. In other words, she's a wallflower.]

[She is, however, a polite wallflower, and won't decline an invitation.]

[Well, couldn't have that. Ky feels that someone like Signum deserves to enjoy herself at an occasion such as this. Hence why he approaches.]

Pardon me, but would it be too forward of me to ask you for a dance?
brustriese: (You have failed me for the last time)

[personal profile] brustriese 2012-11-18 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yes.

[Siiiiiiiip.]

[personal profile] brustriese 2012-11-18 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, but seriously, did you mean to ask my opinion on social graces, or did you mean to ask for a dance?
ridethelightning: (Nervous)

[personal profile] ridethelightning 2012-11-18 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
...I meant the latter. My apologies for not being clear enough.

Sorry, I like a flowery figure of speech as much as the next knight, but I prefer when people are clear with their intentions.

[For one thing, being polite is hard and confusing. She offers her hand.]

I'm not much of a dancer, but if you'd like, I'll give it a try.

It would be my pleasure to share a dance with you. Perhaps I can redeem myself after my mistake that way.

The one thing I do know about dancing is at least one of us has to be completely honest with our movements, so that should be more than enough. Shall we?
ridethelightning: (Smile)

[personal profile] ridethelightning 2012-11-18 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yes.

[He extends his hand.]

I have plenty of ballroom dancing experience, so I shall take the lead.

[She takes it and walks out to the floor with him.]

I don't think we've met. My name is Signum.
ridethelightning: (Smile)

[personal profile] ridethelightning 2012-11-18 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm Ky Kiske. It's a pleasure to meet you, Signum.

[He finds an open space on the dance floor, then turns to face Signum, wrapping one arm around her waist and grasping her hand with the other.]

[personal profile] brustriese 2012-11-19 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
[Signum leans back and balances into a dancer's frame.]

You're a knight as well, I'm guessing. Or a dancer who does a lot of weight training.
ridethelightning: (Lost in thought)

[personal profile] ridethelightning 2012-11-19 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
[And Ky leads them into a simple waltz.]

I suppose that would depend on your definition of a knight. I was, however, a soldier who worked his way into a commission. Nowadays, I serve as an officer of international law.

[Fortunately, swordfighting translates well to the balance and footwork needed well enough that Signum can follow easily, even if she doesn't dance much.]

That's more or less what I'm doing nowadays as well. I'm actually here as an escort for my superior.

[Who's currently off entertaining herself with whatever girls aren't dancing at the moment, as expected.]
ridethelightning: (Lost in thought)

[personal profile] ridethelightning 2012-11-19 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
[Ky is observant enough to pick that detail up.]

I see. I suppose I have yet to meet your superior, then.

On a somewhat unrelated subject, you seem to have some discipline with the blade under your own belt. Am I wrong?

She'll introduce herself eventually, trust me. She has all the people skills of my unit, so to speak.

As for me, I was born with a sword in my hand.

[She means that literally, but she'll let Ky draw his own conclusions.]

[personal profile] ridethelightning 2012-11-19 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Then I have something else to look forward to, from the sound of it.

Alas, I cannot say the same. I took up the art at age ten, but I was able to master it in five years.

[He appears to be taking it to mean that she's been training for as long as she can remember.]
brustriese: (Smirk)

[personal profile] brustriese 2012-11-20 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
[Also true!]

Impressive, being able to call yourself a master that young...I suppose that's how you proved yourself in the military.
ridethelightning: (Lost in thought)

[personal profile] ridethelightning 2012-11-20 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
Indeed it is. I first asked to join when I was ten, but Commander Kliff told me I was too young...but if I trained for five years and came back, then things might be different. I did just that, and he inducted me after a single spar.

It was shortly after my mother died. I had nothing else left, and I wanted to make a difference.

Losing a loved one is hard, especially that young. Most people don't channel that kind of grief so positively.
ridethelightning: (Lost in thought)

[personal profile] ridethelightning 2012-11-21 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
I know. I thank the way my mother raised me for that...as well as my own adoration of Commander Kliff. The clergy who ran the orphanage I ended up in did a lot to help me, too.
