[And as he says that, they reach the outskirts of Viridian City and head out on to Route 2.]

Let's keep our eyes peeled for now.

[ Good. Good. That'd be one less thing for her to worry about. ]

Yeah. Last thing we need is to get surrounded by an army of bugs... Or whatever else is out there.

No kidding. If we keep encountering them two at a time, that'd be a lot better.

[And sure enough, when they step into the tall grass, they're beset upon by a Pidgey and a Rattata.]

...Well, speak of the devil.

[His hand goes straight for Charmander's Poké Ball.]

[ Hey, not bugs, at least. And while most birds she found here so far hadn't actually had flying type moves... better safe than sorry, right? She's already moving to let Bulbasaur out of the ball. ]

You mind taking care of the bird and I'll handle the rat?

I was just about to make that suggestion myself. Let's go, Charmander!

[Athrun throws the Poké Ball and lets Charmander out. He immediately orders it to attack the wild Pidgey.]

Go on Bulbasaur!

[ And almost as soon as she releases her Bulbasaur, it's already charging at the Rattata without her even needing to send out an actual command. Of course, they've already done something like this enough times on the way to Viridian, but still. ]

[Meanwhile Athrun's Charmander manages to keep the Pidgey at bay. However, this time, when the Pidgey is weak, Athrun takes a different action.

Athrun reaches into his satchel and pulls out an empty Poké Ball. Then, he throws it at the Pidgey. It bounces off the bird's forehead, then pulls it into the ball.

Several shakes later, the ball clicks. The Pidgey has been caught.]

[ Wow, you weren't wasting any time with this whole capturing thing, were you Athrun? Still, it was something that they were going to have to get used to, wasn't it?

Unfortunately, before Yukari could even think about trying to capture the Rattata, Bulbasaur was already tackling it hard enough to cause it to faint. Which... meant that she couldn't even think about capturing it. For some reason that she wasn't completely sure about.]

... Huh. That seemed like it was a lot easier than the last time.

Well, we're starting to get used to this. As are the Pokémon, I'd imagine. All this exercise is making them stronger.

Anyway, let me pause for a moment. I need to heal my new team member.

[Athrun lets his freshly-caught Pidgey out of its Poké Ball. He then pulls a Potion out of his satchel and sprays it on the bird. The Pidgey recoils at first, but then relaxes as its wounds heal.]

[ Yukari doesn't say anything as she watches that, but she does kneel down to pet her Bulbasaur as she watches it.

Finally though, she does have to say something as she watches the bird pokemon. ]

I'm surprised that it's not trying to run away from you as fast as it can...

Yeah. Must be something about the ball. It'll be interesting to see how much it obeys in battle.

[When Athrun finishes healing his Pidgey, he calls it back into its Poké Ball.]

All right, let's get moving again.

... Yeah. I guess we should.

[ She recalls her Bulbasaur this time, looking over at its ball for a moment before shaking her head. If it was something with the ball, that meant that Bulbasaur was...

It probably wasn't something that they should be thinking about. Not while they were stuck here. ]

[After another battle or two, they reach the entrance to Viridian Forest. They walk through the guard station and emerge into the forest proper.]

...Have you ever seen a forest this thick?

I've lived in Japan all my life, I can pretty much count the number of times I've seen a forest on one hand.

[ Might just be a little bit of an exaggeration, but not by much. ]

But yeah, the last time I've been anywhere like this, it didn't seem to be as dense as this.

...Good point. Well, this'll be interesting, then. Good thing we brought the camping equipment, too. We'll have to set up camp earlier in these woods, since it'll get too dark to see sooner.

At least, that's how it seems to me.

Yeah. I'm not really feeling the 'suicidally moving around the unfamiliar forest during the night' thing all that much.

[ Sure's sure Akihiko would just considering it 'training' if given the option, but thankfully he wasn't here right now. ]

... They said that we'd only be in here for a couple of days at most though, right?

That's what they said. Eager to get back to civilization already, are we?

[He's teasing.]

[ That gets a laugh from her. ]

Yeah. I am. I'm a city girl through and through. Or at the very least I prefer my forests or jungles to have a resort nearby.

Yeah, I'm more familiar with the city myself. Growing up in a colony and living on a tropical island tends to do that to you.

Still, it's not my first time living off the land, so to speak. I'm confident enough.

Well... at least that makes one of us.

[ There's a rustling sound nearby, and Yukari turns towards it, staring for a few moments. But nothing seems to come out of wherever it came from, so she just sighs and turns back to Athrun. ]

Still think I'm going to be a lot more comfortable once we're out of this forest though.

All the more reason to keep moving.

[No sooner does he finish saying that then they're immediately challenged by two wild Pokémon -- a Caterpie and a Weedle.]

But it looks like we'll have to deal with this first. Go!

[Athrun sends his newly-caught Pidgey out to fight this time.]

[ Yukari doesn't even have time to react to what he said before the bugs were upon them again. Since unlike Athrun she didn't have any other options, she sent out Bulbasaur. ]

I think I remember them saying that the yellowish one is poisonous. Let me handle that one!

[ Bulbasaur was supposedly immune to being poisoned, which would possibly make it a lot easier for her than Atrhun's Pidgey. At least if it ended up being a long fight, anyway. ]

Better yet, let's focus it down before it can poison either of our Pokémon. The fewer Antidotes we have to use, the better.

[Immediately, Athrun orders Pidgey to attack the Weedle.]

That's... not really necessary. Bulbasaur's immune to poison.

[ Still, she's going to have him attack the Weedle to, just because at this point getting rid of it seemed like it'd be the better option. ]

True, but neither of my Pokémon have the same benefit. It might try to ignore Bulbasaur.

[The combined effort is enough to bring down the Weedle, though the Caterpie has an opening to attack Bulbasaur's flank.]
